St Lomans Mullingar 0.15 St Malachys 1.17

St Lomans and St Malachys concluded their Division 3 campaigns in Lakepoint Park on Monday evening last with neither promotion or survival at stake, both sides league status already assured in previous games. 

It was St Lomans who started the games the better outscoring the visitors four points to one in the opening ten minutes with the first three points coming from the experienced Gerry Farrell, Jonathon Plunkett and James Murray. The Murray point came as a result of a great move involving Shane Flynn, Michael Gleeson and Paul Smith. The latter got the fourth point for the blues.

 

Stephen Gallagher denied St Malachys a goal with a wonderful save but this sparked the visitors into life as they kicked six unanswered points lead by the classy Darren Ruane. Shane Flynn, Gerry Farrell, Tristan Graham and Daryl Quinn kicked points in the closing stages of the half, but the visitors kicked points of their own as the sides were level at the break.

Paul Smith added points early in the second half either side of two St Malachys points but the crucial score of the game arrived in the 43^rd minute when Darren Ruane buried to the net for the visitors. This gave St Malachys a lead that wouldn’t be overturned but the blues never gave up lead by the returning Shane Flynn who put in a wonderful sixty minutes kicking six points to his name. St Malachys ran out five-point winners.

Although a defeat this was a solid effort from the blues with a number of positives to take from the game. Senan Russell continues to shine in each game. Shane Flynn was excellent in his return to football while young players like Paul and Kyle Smith, Tristan Johnson, Oisin Tyrell and Tristan Graham gained further adult football experience.
