Leinster Championship
St Lomans Mullingar 1.09 St Columbas 0.14
St Lomans suffered defeat to a hungry and well drilled St Columbas side in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday afternoon last. A cold but clear day left for ideal conditions for this Leinster Championship Quarter Final.
Stephen Gallagher was brought into action early on to deny St Columbas a certain goal on the two-minute mark. Shane Dempsey opened the scoring with a point after been set up by Conradh Reilly and Paul Sharry. A wonderful point from the home sides James Mc Givney levelled the scores soon after. It was Columbas who had started the livelier but were guilty of some wayward shooting. A bright spell midway through the half saw St Lomans Ciaran Kilmurray, Paul Sharry and Shane Dempsey kick points with a David Mc Givney free for Columbas scored in between these.
It was St Lomans that were guilty of poor wides in the second quarter and the home side found their shooting form kicking five points without reply. John Heslin reduced the margin with a wonderful score off his left foot to leave just two points between the teams at the break.
St Lomans were unlucky not to grab a goal from the restart as Ciaran Kilmurray sent a shot towards goal only for goalkeeper Patrick Rodgers to save Killers placed effort. David Mc Givney (free) and James Mc Givney added points to extend St Columbas lead five minutes into the second half. A quick free from Kelvin Reilly nine minutes into the half found Shane Dempsey and he spotted the run of Paddy Dowdall with the centre back burying to the back of the net. Crucially though the home side responded with a wonderful curled point from James Mc Givney. St Lomans did however get back on level terms with scores from John Heslin and Shane Dempsey. St Columbas dug deep though and out-scored the blues four points to two in the closing stages to run out two point winners.
In the closing stages of the game full forward Ciaran Kilmurray went down with a back injury while Kelvin Reilly suffered a head injury during the game. We wish them both a speedy recovery.
The result brings an end to the blues Leinster Championship campaign but the year will go down as a huge success after the lads retained their championship crown. A Division 1 League final V Garrycastle awaits this weekend!
