Senior Ladies 2016 Champions!!!
04-10-2016

St Lomans Mullingar 1.17 Garrycastle 3.06

The senior ladies won their first senior championship since 2006 in a thriller against Garrycastle in The Downs on Saturday afternoon last. The ladies set their stall out at the start of the year to overturn the disappointment of 2015 and they duly delivered in fact on the double as they were also crowned league champions earlier in the season. This game was in the balance right up to the final stages of the sixty minutes but a steely determination from this St Lomans team meant they weren’t letting this opportunity slip away.

Leona Archibold opened the scoring with a point from a free after she had been fouled on route towards goal. Garrycastle responded in clinical fashion with a goal from Laura Brennan. Aileen Martin was denied a certain goal by the southsiders goalkeeper Meadhbh Flynn before both sides exchanged a point each soon after. St Lomans hit a real purple patch and popped over points from Lucy Mc Cartan, Leona Archibold(3), Bridgie Heslin and Vicky Carr as the blues were bossing the midfield battle. St Lomans were awarded a penalty in the 23rd minute after Leona Archibold had been fouled and unfortunately she was denied from the resultant kick by the Garrycastle keeper for what would have been St Lomans first goal. Aoife Connolly registered Garrycastle’s second goal when she fisted a high ball to the net. Late scores in the closing stages in the half left it all square at half time.

The second half turned into a real battle as St Lomans tried to put the game to bed only to see Garrycastle keep coming back at them. It was the green and red side that opened the second half scoring with two points before substitute Katie Layde made an immediate impact to bury home a goal for St Lomans. Both sides traded scores including yet another Garrycastle goal. The blues however finished the game the stronger and a wonderful curled point from Julie Mc Laughlin along with a treble of points from Lucy Mc Cartan put them into a lead that wouldn’t be overturned.

The sound of the final whistle was music to the ears of the St Lomans players, management and supporters alike as the 10 year drought had finally come to an end! After the game joint captains Rebecca Dunne and Ciara Blundell were presented with the Jack Lyster Memorial Cup. While there were a number of contenders on the day the Official Player of the match award went to the talented Lucy Mc Cartan.

It goes without saying these bunch of ladies have done the club proud with their achievements this year and we look forward to them giving the upcoming Leinster Championship a real go! Well done also to manager Enda Sheridan and his back room team of Paul Connaughton, Ted Cronin and Laura Newman.
