Division 3

St Lomans Mullingar 0.06 Kilbeggan Shamrocks 1.10

St Lomans travelled to Kilbeggan on St Patrick’s Day for the second round of the Division 3 league. Although the game ended in a seven point defeat it was a much improved performance from the opening round drubbing.

Kilbeggan began brightly and went for an early goal only to be denied by a point blank save from stand in goalkeeper Garrett Hickey. They did however soon raise the green flag with a goal and soon followed it with a point. St Lomans settled into the game and it became a much more competitive affair. Niall Mc Gurran got the blues off the mark with a point off his left foot. Evan Meleady added a point after great build up play from Seanie Dinnegan, Jonathon Plunkett and Johnny Mee. The home side added points to extend their lead to five points at the break.

Once again Kilbeggan raced out of the blocks on the resumption of play and added four unanswered points. The blues to their credit clawed their way back into the game with points from Johnny Mee, Chris Gilbert and Niall Mc Gurran(2). The Fennell brothers for Kilbeggan proved difficult to deal with and were involved in scores to keep the home sides lead in tacked as they held on to run out seven point winners.

Division 5

Mullingar Shamrocks 3-11 St Lomans Mullingar 0-09

St. Lomans Mullingar opened their Division 5 campaign on a beautiful Sunday morning last in Springfield with a loss to near neighbours Mullingar Shamrocks.

As has been the case in recent times St. Lomans were very slow to start and thanks to some unerring accuracy from the Shamrocks forwards the blues trailed by 1-10 to 0-02 at half time. The two St Lomans scores coming from Niall and Kyle Mc Gurran. This half is best forgotten as St Lomans never got into the game and were guilty of some very poor misses in front of goal.

The second half was a totally different affair with the blues eventually finding their form. Inspired by man-of-the-match Seanie Dinnegan St. Lomans began to find their range and tagged on some excellent scores with Christopher Gilbert, Declan Colgan, Conor Matthews, Pauric McComb and Sean Flanagan all contributing with some very well-taken scores.

Sean Kelly was excellent in goals and could not be faulted for any of the goals conceded however the concession of 2 very soft second-half goals (one of which was an own-goal) and some more wayward shooting from the St Lomans forwards, effectively ended any chance of a Blues comeback.

Seanie Dinnegan, Hugh Broderick, Daryl Quinn, Evan Maleady and Johnny Mee kept battling away, but despite the Blue’s Captain Niall Mc Gurran tagging on two late points it was simply too-little too-late.

Despite the disappointing result the second half display was much more encouraging and St. Lomans will have learned a lot from this game. With many players unavailable for the game, it was left to some of the younger players like James Cox, Andrew McKenna and Jonathan Nugent to step up to the plate, which they duly did.

Fitness and accuracy were a problem on the day and these two issues can only be sorted out on the training grounds, so we are hoping to see all of the players at training (with the seniors) next Tuesday night.

Team; Sean Kelly, Thomas Kilmurray, Senan Russell, Hugh Broderick, Christopher Gilbert (0-1), Seanie Dinnegan, Declan Colgan (0-1), Daryl Quinn, Evan Maleady, Conor Matthews (0-1), Johnny Mee, James Cox, Kyle Mc Gurran (0-1), Niall Mc Gurran (0-3), Jonathan Nugent. Subs Used; Pauric McComb (0-1), Sean Flanagan (0-1), Andrew McKenna.
