ACFL Division 1:

St Loman’s 1.07 The Downs 2.08

St Loman’s had a disappointing end to their division 1 league campaign last Sunday morning in Lakepoint Park, suffering a four point defeat to the Downs. The Blues would advance to League final if they won but not for the first time this season the Saints were short a number of key and experienced players and the task ultimately proved too difficult. Nevertheless a young Loman’s team showed tremendous courage and kept plugging away until the bitter end.

Luke Loughlin got the scoring underway for the visitors, but Loman’s responded with a deflected goal from Fola Ayorinde, Paul Whelehan then scored a beautiful point to give the Hosts a three point lead. However mid-way through the First Half, The Downs had a purple patch with Luke Loughlin adding two more points. Shortly after the Visitors added a goal after an attempted point rebounded off the woodwork and fell to Ian Martin who finished past Jason Daly. Just Before the interval Fola Ayorinde’s vicious shot went over the bar but The Downs quickly cancelled it out with a Loughlin Point. At Half time the Blues trailed by two points.

The Saints started the Second Half well and Paul Whelehan’s free left the minimum between the sides. Luke Loughlin added another score to restore the two point- gap. The Downs then struck a killer blow after an error in the Loman’s full-back line resulted in a turnover, Kevin O Sullivan netted to give the visitors a five point cushion. The Hosts added two points to get back within a single score, with Conor O’Donoghue and Paul Whelehan both on target. The Downs then added three consecutive points to leave the gap at 6 points. Conradh Reilly hit an excellent floated score to reduce the arrears before Paul Whelehan got the final score to leave the final deficit at four points.

It must be said that many Loman’s players were suffering from fatigue with Adam Carroll, Senan Russell and Rory Sheahan all having played a full sixty minutes in Division 3 the previous night .However they all performed exceptionally in the circumstances and their commitment can never be questioned. Among the impressive performers for the hosts were Kelvin Reilly, Conradh Reilly and Tristan Graham who all kept going until the very end. Unfortunately St Loman’s will not contest the League Final as the absence of notable players really took its toll. Luke Dempsey’s men now must re-group in preparation for this summer’s championship.

Team; Jason Daly, Rory Sheahan, Darragh O’Keefe, Sean Kelly, Conor O’Donoghue (0.01), Sean Lancaster, Senan Russell, Conradh Reilly (0.01), Kelvin Reilly, Paddy Lynam, Paul Whelehan (0.04), Tristan Graham, Stephen Gallagher, Fola Ayorinde (1.01), Adam Carroll. Subs used; David Whelan, Stephen Gallagher.

ACFL Division 3:

St Loman’s 2.05 Mullingar Shamrocks 2.14

St Loman’s hosted Mullingar Shamrocks in their final division 3 match of the year on Saturday evening. With the Saints already safe in the division the match had very little significance for the home-side but the Visitors knew a win would confirm their own safety. The Blues were short a number of players, as a result of the Division 1 match being played the following Morning. Unfortunately two early goals for Shamrocks made their task extremely difficult but credit must go to a Loman’s side who settled into the game nicely afterwards. The Host’s scored 4 points with Sean Daly’s the pick of the bunch after a swift interchange. After  being 7 points down to no score after 10 minutes , the Saints responded very well. Cian Cleary’s two pointed frees helped keep the scoreboard ticking over.

It was a real gutsy performance in the second half from the Blues who matched a strong Shamrocks team (including many of their senior players) score for score in the Second Half. Niall “Nipper” Dowdall’s point was the pick of the bunch for the Hosts. The ever reliable Gareth Hickey added two goals to add to his impressive scoring tally in Division 3 this season.

Fair play to the likes of Daryl Quinn and Niall Dowdall who made their returns to football and helped Loman’s fulfil the fixture. Impressive individual performances for Loman’s included club stalwarts Senan Russell and Adam Carroll. Also Cian Cleary and Sean Daly were effective in the forward line. Apart from the First ten minutes, a very rusty Loman’s side did well to stick with a very strong Shamrocks team.

Team; Stephen Gallagher, Jack Tyrell, Adam Carroll, Rory Sheahan, Gary Bridges, Senan Russell, Sean Regan, Daryl Quinn, Niall Dowdall (0.01), Sean Daly (0.02), Cian Cleary (0.02), Andrew McKenna, Garett Hickey (2.00), Johnny Mee. Subs used; Stephen Sheridan.

Under 10 Girls Blitz:

Lakepoint Park was a hive of activity on Saturday afternoon, as we were host venue for one of the County U10 Girls Blitzes. We had teams from St. Marys (2), Multyfarnham (2), Shandonagh (2), Goldsmith Girls (2), Milltownpass and Loughnavalley, as well as 2 Teams from St. Lomans, so space was at a premium!

Well done to all the girls who took part. The standard of football across the board was terrific and provided huge entertainment for all of the supporters. A big thank you to all of the Clubs for coming in such numbers; to our referees; to Jean on the clock/ hooter; and to the ladies who organised and distributed the treats afterwards.
