Division 5:

St. Loman’s Mullingar 1-16 Mullingar Shamrocks 3-10

(16/12/2018)

Despite a flurry of last-minute player withdrawals for the final game of 2018, St. Loman’s 3rd side still departed Springfield safe in the knowledge that they had once again secured their Division 5 status for 2019.

In what was an entertaining game throughout, St. Loman’s knew beforehand that they simply had to avoid defeat to stay up, but with Shamrocks racing into a 9-point lead early in the 2nd half, the signs looked very ominous indeed.

However the Blues never panicked, and gradually clawed themselves back into the game under the guidance of the sides more experienced players, players like the evergreen Joe Matthews, Johnny Brady, Tommy Lambden, Darragh O’Keefe and captain Adam Carroll who led by example throughout the game. Tristan Johnson, Shane Cleary and Kyle Smith repeatedly snuffed out opposition attacks from their defensive positions, Sam McCartan was excellent in midfield and scored a superb goal to go with his 2 points, whilst upfront Andy McKenna worked tirelessly securing several free kicks for which the very impressive Conan O’Hara duly converted.

Apart from the result, the most refreshing aspect of this game was the performances of the younger players, several of who only acquired the North Leinster Senior schools football title last week with Coláiste Mhuire Mullingar. Oisin Hogan seems to go from strength to strength with each game he plays, Tristan Graham never seems to have a bad game, whilst both James Baker and Frank Kavanagh were excellent throughout the game. Several of the aforementioned players will surely feature into Luke Dempsey’s plans for the senior side in 2019.

When Mick Gordon blew the final whistle, the draw-result meant that St. Loman’s were staying up and that it would be Ballynacargy who now joined Mullingar Shamrocks in relegation to Division 6. Congratulations to the management team of Richie Cleary, Declan Cox and Gary Devine for devoting their time and effort to the team throughout the year.
