St Loman’s Mullingar 1.11 Mullingar Shamrocks 2.12

Sunday the 21^st of October will be remembered as a historic day for Westmeath club football, as we witnessed the first all Mullingar final between St Loman’s and Mullingar Shamrocks. There was an electric atmosphere in TEG Cusack Park from both sets of supporters, the match was filled with quality from beginning to end and proved worthy of the occasion.

It was Shamrocks who settled quicker in the opening stages and got off the mark with two points from Dean Moore. St Loman’s were reduced to 14 men early on for an off the ball incident. The defending champions eventually found their feet when David Windsor pointed to get the Saints on the scoreboard. John Heslin who was excellent throughout equalised with a free and then put the Blues in front with an unbelievable long range score. David Whelan and Ronan O’Toole were also instrumental for St Loman’s in the first half and indeed throughout the match.

Shamrocks responded with three successive points from Alan Cashman, Denis Corroon and Dean Moore respectively. The 2012 Champions struck a killer blow before half-time when Paddy Fagan found the bottom corner of the St Loman’s net. Two more phenomenal points from Heslin kept the Blues in touch before Denis Corroon made it a four point game. John Heslin who gave an exhibition of scoring, added two more points to his tally from placed balls. Heslin’s final point of the half was the score of the match, the Saint’s talisman pointed from an unbelievably tight angle to leave the deficit at 2 points going into half-time.

Loman’s started the second half like a house on fire, with yet another Heslin point before Ken Casey found the net. The goal came from a quickly taken free from Heslin that found Ronan O’Toole who picked out Ken Casey with a fine pass and the number 15 made no mistake with the finish. Dean Moore responded for Shamrock’s which left the Blue’s ahead by the minimum. The pivotal moment in the match came with twenty minutes remaining. Shamrock’s forced a turnover in the Loman’s defence and the ball eventually came to Denis Corroon who rounded goalkeeper Stephen Gallagher, the former then finished coolly to restore the lead for Mullingar Shamrocks.

Both teams traded scores after two Heslin free’s were cancelled out by points from Denis Corroon and Simon Quinn to leave the arrears at two points. Youngster TJ Cox brought the Saints within touching distance with a beautifully taken score, Cox’s point was an indicator of the progress he has made in his breakthrough year at senior level. The defending Champions poured men forward in added time to search for the equaliser but ultimately Shamrock’s exploited the gaps vacated in the Loman’s defence. Three late individual scores from Dean Moore, Denis Corroon and Ciaran Curley put the challengers out of sight.

St Loman’s continued to fight until the end but it was all in vain as Mullingar Shamrocks claimed their first county title since 2012 and brought an end to St Loman’s search for the elusive four in a row. From all at St Loman’s we would like to congratulate our neighbours Mullingar Shamrocks on their monumental victory and wish them the best of luck in the Leinster Club Championship.

Commiserations to all our players and management for their continued work throughout the year. This team has brought the club wonderful success for the last number of years and although the result did not go in their favour on the day they have done their club proud once again. Lastly a big thanks to all supporters who gave the team tremendous support on the day.

U16 Championship

Rally the troops one last time!!! The U16 boys contest the championship final V Killucan in The Downs on Bank Holiday Monday next at 11am. Lets get a large crowd out to cheer on the lads!

Lotto

There was no jackpot winner from the lotto draw on October 18th. The numbers drawn were 15,17,23,25. Winners of €50 each were Aidan Lyons, Mick Coyle, Lisa A-Barr, Stephen Callaghan. Next weeks jackpot will be €5,700!

Scór

We are delighted to announce that the St Lomans Scór is going from strength to strength. We now have experienced Scór mentors in the following disciplines; Irish Dancing/Set Dancing, Ballad Group and Instrumental Music, Singing, Recitation, Novelty Act and Question Time. 

If your are interested in joining any of the above come join us for fun and craic! This is for youth and adult members, all welcome!
