Senior Charge Into Final!
09-10-2018

St Lomans Mullingar 2.10 Garrycastle 0.12

St Lomans booked their place in the Championship Final with a win against Garrycastle in Cusack Park on Sunday last. The game was played in conditions where a gael force wind had a serious impact on the game and the blues voted to play against it in the first half.

Ken Casey opened the scoring with a beautiful curled effort off his left foot after been set up by the impressive Fola Ayorinde. Garrycastle made use of the wind advantage by scoring four points without reply via Dessie Dolan(2) and Conor Cosgrove(2). Their full forward Alex Gardner missed a glorious goal chance as he shot wide when goalkeeper Stephen Gallagher stood strong in between the posts.

David Whelan added the blues third point before Garrycastle added two further scores from Dessie Dolan and James Sheerin. St Lomans probably should have had a goal of their own but Ronan O Toole was denied by a great defensive block. Crucially, the blues reduced the margin to just two points before the break with John Heslin and Ken Casey on target.

St Lomans made a dream start to the second half when goal machine TJ Cox turned his man in the box to rattle in the blues first goal. Both team exchanged points with John Heslin(2) on target before Alex Gardner and Conor Cosgrove pointed to level the game. The turning point of the game arrived on the 41st minute when a Stephen Gallagher kick out found John Heslin, a sublime pass from Heslin made its way to Chris Gilbert and the blues substitute made no mistake and buried to the net for St Lomans second goal. It was from here the tide have fully turned and it looked like only one winner from there on.

John Heslin added to his tally before a great run from man of the match David Whelan saw him kick his second point. Garrycastle kept in touch with a point from Conor Cosgrove in between these scores. Ken Casey sealed a fine performance adding his third point while John Heslin converted a 45m free soon after. In the closing stages the blues defence lead by Paddy Dowdall and Gary Glennon ensured the southsiders wouldn’t get a much-needed goal to set up a nervy finish. Dessie Dolan added two frees but it was St Lomans who held on for a four-point win.

The result sets up an all Mullingar final with our neighbours Mullingar Shamrocks who were impressive winners against Tyrrellspass. It should be an intriguing Final that will generate huge interest around the town with all roads leading to Cusack Park on October 21st.
