Junior Championship

St Lomans Mullingar 6.06 Mullingar Shamrocks 1.11

Although it was twelve scores each in this Junior Championship opener it was St Lomans six goals that proved the difference in Springfield on Sunday morning last. Man of the match TJ Cox played a part in five of the goals by scoring three and assisting another two. A number of stellar performances ensured the blues got off to the perfect start in this Championship.

The aforementioned TJ Cox took all his chances in front of goal with aplomb. James Cox was in great scoring form while Fola Ayorinde was a tower of strength in midfield. Sean Kelly and Darragh O Keeffe were the stand out players in defence.

Both teams were guilty of wides in the opening five minutes while Garrett Hickey was denied by the post for a goal. St Lomans got off the mark in the eighth minute when Sam McCartan pointed from an acute angle. Chris Gilbert followed this up with the blues first goal after a TJ Cox run and pass. Garrett Hickey pointed a free either side of Shamrocks points from Alan Cashman, Ross Corroon(45m free) and Dean Moore.

The crucial point in the game saw St Lomans scores two goals in two minutes both via James Cox. The home side added two points before the break but it was the blues who were six points to the good at half time.

Shamrocks started the second half brightly with Conor O Brien opening the scoring with a point. TJ Cox responded in perfect fashion with his first goal after a massive catch out the field from Fola Ayorinde. Shamrocks were awarded a penalty for an apparent foot block and Dean Moore raised the green flag with a perfectly executed spot kick. Both teams traded points mid-way through the half with Daniel Sheridan and James Cox on target for St Lomans.

The blues finished the game strongly with two further goals from TJ Cox, one of these started with a great kick out from Stephen Gallagher that saw another wonderful catch from Fola Ayorinde and TJ with a classy finish. Shamrocks added late points but it was St Lomans who finished deserving winners.

ACL Division 1

St Lomans Mullingar 5.19 Castledaly 1.12

St Lomans produced their best league performance on Tuesday evening last in a dominant display against the host team Castledaly. Results in the other games went in favour of the blues throwing them right back into contention to contest another league final.

The first half was complete one-way traffic as St Lomans raced into an irreversible lead. There was some top-class team moves throughout the half. Ken Casey had his shooting boots on kicking four first half points. The blues spread the scores among the forward line with David Windsor, James Cox, Ronan O Toole(2), TJ Cox and Garrett Hickey also raising the white flag. Two goals were also scored when Conradh Reilly coolly finished to the net while Garrett Hickey kept up his impressive record from the penalty spot for the blues second goal.

St Lomans were dominant at midfield with Ciaran Kilmurray and Fola Ayorinde bossing the centre of the park. Resolute defending saw the home side held to just three first half points scored. While all six backs were impressive, corner back Sean Kelly produced a flawless display for the sixty minutes.

Castledaly started the second half in determined fashion and kicked three unanswered points. Ken Casey converted a free to break their momentum after TJ Cox had been fouled. The home side were unlucky on a few occasions not to raise the green flag most notably when they rattled the crossbar.

Two goals in two minutes from James Cox and Fola Ayorinde ended any slim hopes of a comeback from Castledaly. Ken Casey, Conradh Reilly and David Windsor added to their tally while David Whelan(2) and Chris Gilbert also got in on the act with points. While Castledaly did add a late goal the final say of the game went to the impressive Ronan O Toole who rattled in a goal with a sublime finish from a Ken Casey pass.
