St Lomans Mullingar 0.13 Simonstown 1.08

There’s a term in football “goals win games” but St Lomans will use a different term after their last two Leinster Championship games .... “Squads win games”. Once again, the introduction of subs had a major impact for the blues when they overcame Meath Champions Simonstown Gaels in Cusack Park on Sunday last.

St Lomans made a nightmare start to the game and found themselves 1.04 to 0.00 down after 15 minutes. Padraig Mc Keever (2), Nathan O Brien and Brian Conlon were point scorers while Mark Mc Cabe raised the green flag. Despite the slow start St Lomans were unlucky not to have a goal or two of their own after Ronan O Toole and Ciaran Kilmurray efforts went wide of the post.

The blues finally settled into the game and kicked four unanswered points with Ken Casey (after a fine run), Paul Sharry (a superb curled effort off the ground), Shane Dempsey (left footed effort) and John Heslin (free) the scorers. Both teams traded two points each before the break with Heslin twice on target including a wonderful solo effort to leave just three between the teams at the break.

The second half belonged to St Lomans as the momentum of the game turned in favour of the blues while they held Simonstown scoreless for 22 minutes. St Lomans had upped their game considerably lead at the back most notably by Paddy Dowdall but all six defenders stood strong. Paul Sharry had his game of the season while the introduction of Kieran Lynam and Conradh Reilly proved to be crucial.

Although it took 11 minutes for St Lomans to register the first score of the half they had it level three minutes later with John Heslin(2) and Shane Dempsey the scorers. Conradh Reilly gave St Lomans the lead after a sublime effort from along the line on the stand side. Paul Sharry and Heslin followed this up with two further points. Simonstown battled back and two points left the minimum between the teams before Kieran Lynam capped a wonderful performance when he fisted over the bar.

The visitors made a late onslaught but St Lomans spirit and determination proved too much to handle as St Lomans booked their place in the Leinster Final.

Footnote; It was great to see so many of our Underage Academy Stars turn up in numbers and playing their part supporting the lads. Well done to Lorcan Sleator, Alan Bracken, Paul Dempsey, Tony Plunkett and all the coaches who organised this!
