St Lomans Mullingar 3.13 Tyrrellspass 0.14

St Lomans made club history on Sunday last by sealing their third championship in as many years with an impressive win against old foe Tyrrellspass. Over 5,000 people turned up to watch a repeat of last year’s decider and any late comers would rue missing one of the greatest goals ever scored in Cusack Park with John Heslin raising the green flag after just 12 seconds.

Captain Heslin set down a dream marker on the game when catching the ball from the throw in and charged towards goal. A quick exchange with David Windsor freed up space as Heslin powered through and sent a thundering shot to the roof of the net. A Roy of The Rovers type start! Ger Egan got the villagers off the mark with a converted free before St Lomans added their second goal. A classy Heslin pass made its way to Ken Casey who after a neat run unselfishly set up Sean Flanagan who finished to the net.

Tyrrellspass to their credit recovered well from their nightmare start and added three unanswered points with two frees from Egan and Ben Gavin scoring from play. Both teams exchanged two points each with Casey and Heslin on target for the blues. Paul Sharry and Shane Dempsey also got their names on the scoresheet cancelling out scores from Tyrrellspass, Dempsey’s effort was the pick of these with an outside of the boot effort. St Lomans were dealt a blow just before half time when full back Shane Flynn was shown a red card for an off the ball incident.

Although holding a three-point lead St Lomans looked to have an uphill task ahead of them with the deficit in numbers however their experience came to the fore as they stuck to the challenge in hand. In truth the blues never looked like losing. Shane Dempsey and John Heslin points were responded to with points from Conor Slevin and Ger Egan. It was crucial that the blues didn’t let the scores reduce to the minimum and some resolute defending ensured this with Gerry Grehan, David Whelan and Paddy Dowdall the stand out players. Dowdall did a great job in holding Tyrrellspass star man Ger Egan to just a single point from play.

Points were exchanged midway through the half but when Tyrrellspass were reduced to fourteen players with Ben Gavin shown the red card the blues kicked on and finished the game off in ruthless style. Ken Casey and Sean Flanagan added to their tallies before John Heslin got his second goal with a low shot past Darren Quinn. The blues finished eight-point winners.

After the game Westmeath Chairman Sean Sheridan presented the Flanagan Cup to John Heslin who also picked up the man of the match award! St Lomans now face Mullinaghta in the Leinster Quarter Final in Longford on November 12th.
