St Lomans Mullingar 1.14 Garrycastle 2.08

St Lomans retained their league title against Garrycastle in Cusack Park on Sunday morning last. This was a first Division 1 League final at headquarters in a long time and the game didn’t disappoint with it serving as a great tonic for both sides with the championship just three weeks away. Goals, points, black, yellow and red cards were all produced in the sixty minutes!

St Lomans were the better side in the opening thirty minutes and wasted no time in building up a lead. A wonderful pass from Ronan O Toole set up Ciaran Kilmurray for a point before Ken Casey and Shane Dempsey also raised the white flag. Dessie Dolan got Garrycastle off the mark with a pointed free in the twelfth minute. Casey added a point to his tally before Ronan O Toole got his name on the score sheet after a wonderful move involving Kelvin Reilly and Shane Dempsey. O Toole was the standout player throughout the game, first to every break and some excusive array of passing, enough to win him a man of the match display.

Dessie Dolan and Alex Gardner reduced the deficit with points for Garrycastle. Dolan’s came from a free that saw St Lomans corner back Neil O Toole black carded. Fola Ayorinde was introduced and he was involved in a score soon after setting up the lively Ken Casey for a point. David Windsor and Shane Dempsey also added points with Windsor’s a super effort shooting with his back to goal. Garrycastle responded in fine fashion and got the first goal of the game to leave just two points between the team’s. Shane Dempsey added two points before the break with the blues unlucky not to have a goal of their own with Ken Casey’s effort blocked by the keeper.

The second half was a tense affair with a number of yellow cards issued by the referee and a late Red Card for Garrycastle. Ken Casey opened the scoring of the half with a point before St Lomans were dealt a further blow losing David Whelan to a black card. The blues reacted well to it however and when Daniel Sheridan was fouled in the area a penalty was awarded with Garrycastle’s Alan Fox receiving a black card. Shane Dempsey stepped up and coolly slotted home the penalty. The southsiders were awarded a penalty of their own soon after with Jason Daly harshly judged to have foot blocked. The resulting penalty was buried to the roof of the net. Garrycastle hit a real purple patch and some of the blues more experienced players stepped up to weather the storm. Alex Gardner was deadly accurate from placed balls scoring three frees with Daniel Sheridan pointing in between these. Chris Gilbert and Ken Casey added late points as St Lomans held on for the win and their fifth league title in a row!
