U21 Championship

St Lomans Mullingar 3.19 Ballynacargy 1.07

St Lomans booked their place in the Quarter final of the U21 Championship after a facile win against Ballynacargy on Tuesday evening last in Lakepoint Park. It was a competitive affair in the early stages but a Sean Lancaster goal in the 22^nd minute was the turning point as the blues never looked back after the green flag was raised.

Troy Maher who was Ballynacargy’s main threat opened the scoring in the first minute. James Cox (2) and Ronan O Toole responded with points for St Lomans. The aforementioned Maher gave his team the lead with a well taken goal on the 10^th minute mark. Both teams traded points midway through the half with Adam Lynch, Ronan O Toole and Chris Gilbert on target for the blues. St Lomans corner back Sean Lancaster made a crucial catch in his own half and a wonderful run up the pitch exchanging passes along the way Eoin Fox saw Lancaster bury to the net. It was from here the blues took control and added further points to ensure a five-point lead at the break.

It was a dominant second half display from St Lomans with a number of players excelling. Sean Flanagan was impressive at midfield while Adam Lynch added a further 1.02 to his name. Chris Gilbert also got in on the act scoring 1.01 while Sean Flanagan, Declan Colgan, James Cox, Tristan Johnson and Shane Cleary added points in a comfortable win for St Lomans.

Division 1

St Lomans Mullingar 3.08 Rosemount 0.12

St Lomans recorded an important win in The Division 1 League away to Rosemount on Sunday morning last. Three goals from St Lomans proved to be the difference on a windy morning. Ironically either team played their better football while playing against that strong wind.

Rosemount started brightly and raced into a two-point lead thanks to scores from their talisman David Mc Cormack. St Lomans were wasteful with their chances in the opening quarter and could easily have scored two goals. Paul Sharry got the blues off the mark with a pointed free after twelve minutes. Some wonderful defending from Neil O Toole started a move involving Kelvin Reilly and Ronan O Toole that saw Paul Sharry bury a shot to the net. Rosemount were deadly accurate from placed balls and added two further points with David Mc Cormack and Sean Pettit the scorers. Ronan O Toole and a Paul Sharry points cancelled out scores for the home side. David Windsor and Ken Casey added a point each in the closing stages of the half before Sean Pettit pointed for Rosemount. This score would be Rosemount’s final score from play.

St Lomans introduced Chris Gilbert at half time and he would prove his worth during the half with two goals. David Mc Cormack converted a free at the start of the half before Gilbert finished to the net for St Lomans second goal. Great work from Ronan O Toole, Billy O Loughlin, Paul Sharry and Ken Casey set up the goal. A wonderful point from David Windsor cancelled out a David Mc Cormack free. Chris Gilbert got his second goal eight minutes into the second half after a Paul Sharry free fell short. Ken Casey and Billy O Loughlin were unlucky not to add further goals later in the half. David Windsor and Paul Sharry added points in the closing stages of the game to seal a five-point win for St Lomans.

Goals proved crucial in this game but a great defensive performance shouldn’t go unmentioned. The home side were held to just four points scored from play. Neil O Toole and Sean Lancaster were the standout defenders on the day while young Kevin Regan held his own at senior level. Gerry Grehan, David Whelan and Jason O Toole were reliable as always.

Division 5

St Lomans Mullingar 1.12 The Downs 4.19

On Saturday evening last St. Lomans travelled away to the league leaders The Downs, for the fourth-round Division 5 league match. The Blues fielded a very different team to the one that beat Castledaly in the previous round with only six of that team starting Saturdays game.

Having won the toss Enda Lambden elected to play with the advantage of a stiff breeze. St. Lomans duly raced into a 3-point lead with two scores coming from Dwayne Egerton and a nice point from Adam Lynch. The Downs soon roared back into contention to bring the game level and over the next fifteen minutes both sides exchanged points, with little to separate the teams. 

Midway through the first half The Downs broke through for a clear goal chance but an excellent save from Paul McGann denied them. However soon after McGann’s save The Downs did eventually rock the Blues with two goals in quick succession to leave them reeling. St Lomans kept plugging away to reduce the deficit and thanks to the hard graft of Cian Burke, Johnny Plunkett and Michael Gleeson further points came from Conor Matthews, Declan Colgan and the impressive Jack Tyrell. However just before half time The Downs scored a killer third goal leaving the halftime score 3-09 to 0-09.

 

St. Lomans introduced three substitutes at halftime with young Ryan Cleary making his debut, alongside two evergreens Kenny Maleady and Robbie Kenny, who were both playing their first game of 2017. The substitutions paid immediate dividends as within a few minutes Robbie had his name on the scoreboard with a well taken point from play and soon afterwards St Lomans raised the green flag when Ryan Cleary was on hand to fist the ball to the net after a blistering shot from Jack Tyrell had rebounded off The Downs goalkeeper. 

The Downs suddenly upped their game and began rattling off several well taken points. St Lomans were lucky to have two very experienced players in the full backline, Adam Carroll and Senan Russell, both who snuffed out several dangerous attacks from The Downs. With some legs beginning to tire St Lomans introduced two more substitutes, Robbie Cleary came on for the hardworking Stephen Sheridan and Gerry Farrell also made an introduction.

St Lomans never gave up but despite further scores from Mathews and Colgan, The Downs attacks were relentless and slowly but surely, they put the game out of reach with some very well taken scores and ended up deserved winners.

St. Lomans should not be too disappointed, it can be difficult to generate consistency when you consider that the Blues have now used more than 40 different players over the past 4 games and although Saturdays result was disappointing the performance certainly was not.

U14 Feile

St Lomans exited the Feile at the Quarter Final stage after defeat to Rosemount in Lakepoint Park on Saturday last. St Lomans made a bright start scoring 1.03 in a dominant opening half. Adam O Connor and Danny Mc Cartan(2) were on target before Robert Cleary made no mistake when a goal chance arose. Rosemount registered two goals that would prove very costly for the blues. The visitors used wind advantage in the second half to full affect and added 2.05 to their tally. St Lomans battled to get back into the game with David Aughey registering the blues second goal but Rosemount held on for a five-point win. Despite the defeat plenty of positives can be taken from the game most notably how some of the younger lads handled the occasion and gained plenty of experience for the remainder of the league campaign and upcoming championship.

Lotto

There was no jackpot winner from the lotto draw on April 12^th. The numbers drawn were 3,4,18,24. Winners of €50 each were Michael Mc Hugh, Marie Devine, Joe Lynch and Joe Martin. Next week’s Jackpot will be €1,600.

Table Quiz

The club is holding a Table Quiz on Friday April 28^th in The Bridge Bar at 9.30pm in aid of a MRI Scanner for Midland Regional Hospital. Tables of 4 are €40 and all members are asked to attend and support a great cause!
