Under 20 Championship Quarter Final:

St Loman’s Mullingar 5-14 Tubberclair 1-07

St Loman’s advanced into the semi-final of the under 20 championship with a comprehensive win in Tubberclair last Friday evening. The Blues opened the scoring with an early goal, Rory Sheahan and Conor Regan combined well to give TJ Cox the simplest of tasks of palming the ball into the gaping Tubberclair net. Tubberclair got on the scoresheet from a placed ball before Conan O’Hara got the Saints first point off his left boot. Tristan Graham then extended the leaded from a fisted point after some lovely combination play between Sam McCartan and Fionn O’Hara. It wasn’t long before the Mullingar men got their second goal, TJ Cox took off on a blistering run beating several players before laying the ball off to Conor Regan who expertly finished into the top corner of the net. The Blues were relentless as Conan O’Hara’s pass found his brother Fionn who, in turn, found Cox who pointed again to give Loman’s breathing space.

Tubberlclair were then given a life-line with a goal of their own after a terrific finish giving Dano Fitzsimons no chance in the Blues’ goal. Sam McCartan responded with a well taken point for the Blues. Both teams then traded two scores each before the interval with Fionn O’Hara and Rory Sheahan on target for the Saints. This left the margin at 6 points in favour of the Saints going into half-time. Loman’s started the second half brightly, reeling off three excellent points with McCartan, Fionn O’Hara and Tristan Graham all getting on the scoresheet. The Blues weren’t finished there as Conan O Hara’s devastating pass found TJ Cox who took it on the run brilliantly, before rounding the Tubberclair goalkeeper, only to be taken down with the goal at his mercy. Referee Keith O Brien had no choice but to point to the penalty spot. Cox then dusted himself off and converted the penalty to put the game beyond doubt. Cox then added yet another point before it was cancelled out by a Tubberclair free.

The Mullingar men were ruthless in attack, Sam McCartan and TJ Cox both added to their already impressive tallies with excellent points. Fola Ayorinde then opened his account for the evening, hammering the ball into an empty Tubberclair net. TJ Cox then pointed after excellent quick feet and a finish to match. Before the Hosts replied with another free kick to slightly reduce the gap. The Blues then got their fifth and final goal of the night, when Hugh Mulhern found his fellow substitute Paul Smith who expertly placed the ball into the bottom corner. Tristan Graham got the Visitors’ final point of the night with his third point from wing-back, capping off a great night for him. Tubberclair got the final two scores of the evening from placed balls to leave the final score at 5-14 to 1-07.

There were impressive performances all over the pitch for the Blues. The St Loman’s defenders held the fort superbly, Daire Smyth performed very well at corner-back, Tristan Graham and Rory Sheahan provided excellent attacking outlets for the Blues with both getting on the scoresheet. Frank Kavanagh controlled the game from centre-half back with great Authority. Whereas the Blues forwards were devastating with Cox, Regan and the O’Hara brothers all performing brilliantly ( Cox in particular finished with a hugely impressive 2.05). However the Man of the Match was in the middle of the park, Sam McCartan dominated midfield winning countless possessions and turnovers, as well as being an excellent distributor of the ball and accurate in front of goal. It truly was the complete performance. The Saints now wait on their semi-final opponent, with time, date and venue also yet to be confirmed.

Under 12 Girls:

Our U12 Girls brought their season to an end this evening with a game against The Mothers. There was a lot of hype in advance of the game, and it sure didn’t disappoint.

The youngsters were quick out of the blocks and with a few early scores, it looked like they would run away with this game. But The Mothers refused to lie down. Gradually, they worked their way back in to the game. Their defence started to get to get to grips (literally!!) with the nippy U12 attack; midfield began to use their height advantage; whilst the power and speed of The Mothers forward line began to tell.

With a couple of minutes to go, it looked like the U12’s had weathered the storm. But they had to withstand a final flourish from The Mothers. First, a powerful goal-bound shot cannoned off the cross-bar and was cleared. Then in the final minute, The Mothers were awarded a penalty. Unfortunately the spot-kick just shaved the outside of the post, and so the U12’s just hung on.

We wish to thank everyone who took part this evening and served up such an entertaining game of football. The U12 girls turned out in great numbers, as they have all year. And it was great to see so many mothers taking to the field - the level of skill and commitment they showed surprised more than a few people in the crowd. Could we see some of these Mothers in St Lomans jerseys next year?
