St Loman’s Mullingar 1.10 Coralstown Kinnegad 0.08

Last Sunday week morning in Lakepoint Park, St Loman’s met Coralstown Kinnegad in the Under 16 Championship semi-final. On a day where the weather conditions were always going to be a factor, the Saints took advantage of the strong breeze in the opening half. Fionn O’Hara opened the scoring with a free which was followed by a well taken score from midfielder David Aughey. The hosts continued to build on their lead with two pointed frees from Fionn O’Hara either side of a well taken free from Danny McCartan.

The Blues struck a killer blow before half time after Danny McCartan intercepted a Kinnegad kick out and found Nathan McCullagh with an excellent early pass, who made no mistake to find the net for the hosts. Kinnegad got their opening score five minutes before the interval with a free, which was quickly cancelled out by a Fionn O’Hara free at the other end. St Lomans lead 1.06 to 0.01 at half time.

Coralstown Kinnegad started the second half the stronger with three consecutive points from placed balls. The gap could have been cut even further but for two fantastic saves from goalkeeper Rory Matthews in the space of a minute. The impressive Danny McCartan then pointed to leave the gap at 6 points heading into the closing stages.

Kinnegad responded with two quick-fire frees to get back within touching distance before Fionn O’Hara added yet another free to give the Blues breathing space. A fantastic display from Rory Matthews was capped off when he made a crucial save, limiting Kinnegad to a point when a goal was on the cards. The Blues got the final two scores of the game, first David Aughey increased the lead with a well taken point. Fittingly though the final score came from Man of the Match Fionn O’Hara, his long-distance point finished off the scoring. Other notably impressive displays for the hosts included Daire Smyth, Shane Daly and Ethan Brown.

As the final whistle blew St. Loman’s were victorious by 1.10 to 0.08 and have now booked their place in the Championship final against Killucan. Congratulations are in order to all players and coaches, we wish them the best of luck in the final.
