ACL Division 1

St Loman’s Mullingar 1.13 Tyrrellspass 0.06

St Loman’s got back to winning ways in Division 1 with a win against Tyrrellspass in testing conditions last Friday evening in Lakepoint Park. The result was well needed after the blues suffered recent defeats to Rosemount and Garrycastle on home soil.

The Saints were quicker out of the blocks with three quick-fire points from Ken Casey and a double from Shane Dempsey. Dempsey added another point from a free before a long-range point from David Windsor gave the home side a five-point advantage. The visitors registered their first point after 20 minutes through Joe Hyland. St Loman’s increased their advantage with late first half points from Paul Sharry and Ken Casey.

The second half brought with it the majority of the scoring. Tyrrellspass got the first score of the half with a fine long-range point from Aaron O’Brien. The visitors then almost raised the green flag but were denied by 2 last ditch blocks by the Saints defence.

With only five points between the teams there was a possible comeback on the cards but the Blues managed to find an extra gear scoring 1-4 without reply. Shane Dempsey started this run of scores with a fine point from play followed by a free. Substitute TJ Cox who impressed on the night put over a super point from distance after Paul Sharry had pointed from a 45. Cox was again involved moments later with a fine pass to Dempsey who played a reverse hand pass to David Windsor who rattled the net, killing any feint hopes of a Tyrrellspass comeback.

Tyrrellspass replied with a well taken free but it was merely a consolation. St Loman’s got the last point of the game through substitute James Cox. There were many impressive individual performances from the home side with Neil O’Toole, Sean Kelly and Gerry Grehan holding firm in defence. Classy displays from David Windsor and Shane Dempsey were instrumental in sealing the win for the Saints.

ACL Division 5

St Loman’s Mullingar 2.09 Tubberclair 0.07

St. Lomans picked up two valuable league points against a strong Tubberclair outfit, played on a beautiful Sunday morning in Lakepoint Park recently.

Tubberclair always looked dangerous in attack, however captain Senan Russell led by example and inspired excellent defensive displays around him from Jack Tyrrell, Tristian Graham, Kyle Smith, Eoghan O’Keefe and the impressive Adam Carroll, limiting the opposition to 5 first half points and only 2 points in the 2nd half. James McKenna’s kickouts were impressive and he provided good ball for the Lomans midfield partnership of Gilbert and Lambden.

The St. Lomans full forward line of Sean Regan, Sean Daly and James Cox, were all causing problems for the Tubberclair backs. In the first half Cox raised 4 white flags, Daly raised 1 and a cracking goal from Regan saw Loman’s go into the break ahead by 1-5 to 0-5.

With 10 minutes gone into the 2nd half, St. Lomans introduced Johnny Plunkett, Gerry Farrell and Andy McKenna, all of which added further impetus for the blues, and midway through the 2nd half Lomans had moved further ahead on a 1-8 to 0-7 scoreline, with James Cox contributing another 2 points and Christy Gilbert scoring 1 point.

Half-forwards Sam McCartan and Paddy Lynam may not have got their names on the scoreboard, but their work rate was very impressive throughout, and with 5 minutes left on the clock it was their hard work that gave Christy Gilbert an opportunity to head goal bound, and with nothing bar a goal on his mind, Christy duly secured the all-important goal that would ultimately put the match beyond the reach of the visitors.

With time nearly up, the last scoring opportunity of the game fell to Mickey Gleeson and Mickey made no mistake, as he fisted the ball over the bar to secure an excellent 8-point win for St. Lomans.

St. Lomans have 3 games remaining, against Shandonagh, Mullingar Shamrocks and Ballynacargy.

Team; James McKenna, Jack Tyrrell, Senan Russell (C), Tristian Graham, Kyle Smith, Eoghan O’Keefe, Adam Carroll, Tommy Lambden, Christy Gilbert (1-1), Sam McCartan, Paddy Lynam, Mickey Gleeson (0-1), Sean Regan (1-0), Sean Daly (0-1), James Cox (0-6). Subs Used ; Johnno Plunkett, Gerry Farrell and Andy McKenna.
