St Lomans Mullingar 2.10 Garrycastle 2.12

St Lomans hopes of retaining the League Title was taken out of their hands after suffering defeat to Garrycastle on Wednesday evening last in Lakepoint Park. The result means the blues will be relying on other results in the remaining rounds to see can they book a place in the league final.

It was a close encounter throughout with the lead overturning a few times during the first half. The visitors took an early two-point lead but St Lomans responded with a goal fisted to the net by Garrett Hickey. It came as the result of a wonderful move involving Shane Dempsey and Daniel Sheridan. Two points soon followed with Paul Sharry converting a free off the ground while Shane Dempsey also raised the white flag. Garrycastle had the better of the second quarter out scoring the blues to leave it all square at half time.

St Lomans made a bright start to the second half responding well to a Garrycastle point with David Windsor, Conradh Reilly and Ken Casey all kicking points. The score of the game arrived seven minutes into the half when Garrett Hickey set up David Windsor with a goal chance, the wing forward still had work to do but buried to the roof of the net leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. Both teams traded scores before Garrycastle were crucially awarded a penalty and they made no mistake converting it past Jason Daly. A second goal soon followed which seen the blues go behind. As the game entered the closing stages the blues had chances to level the game but the score eluded them as the visitors added a late score to earn a two-point win.

While the result wasn’t to be on the day it was a decent performance from St Lomans. Stephen Ryan played his best game in a blues jersey while Senan Russell worked tirelessly for the sixty minutes. Wing forward David Windsor also impressed with a tally of 1.01.

U16 League

St Lomans U16’s earned a hard-fought win on Wednesday evening away to Maryland Tang in the League on the score of 3:12 to 2:10. The home team were three points ahead with fifteen minutes to go but our lads dug deep. Danny McCartan had a good night with the frees, while Tyreke Creevy got two goals from play and Nathan McCullough scored from a penalty. Well done lads!

U14 League

St Lomans travelled to Springfield on Thursday last to play Mullingar Shamrocks in the U14 League.

The host team started strong and within the first 5 minutes put a few goals and points on the board. St Lomans settled into their routine and kept the game alive by picking off a few much-needed points. At half time St Lomans were down by two goals.

St Lomans started strongly in the second half and added a few goals and points to their tally, and with twenty minutes to go pulled ahead of Shamrocks. Both teams went toe to toe in what was a strongly contested game, and in the end with a twelve point turn around St Lomans ran out winners by six points.

While a few players played exceptionally well, the man of the match would have to go to all the squad as it was the team that pulled together and won the game. Well done to all the boys as they remain undefeated in the league, up next an away game in Athlone.

U12 League

Our U11 and U12 boys went on the road to face a strong Caulry outfit on Wednesday evening. There were two tough games of football played, and there was nothing between the teams at half time.

In one game the Cunningham brothers put in a good shift, with James applying pressure on the Caulry defence at one end and Shane “clean-sheet” having another excellent night between the sticks. There was another captain’s performance by John Casey and Sean Tully’s speed proved difficult for the Caulry defence in the second half.

In the U12 game the wind was a big factor and Caulry built up a big lead at half time. St Lomans didn't panic and a memorable goal from Mickey Weir was probably the score of the game.

Beau Greene top scored on the evening and Sean Hayes was commanding at the back. A solid second half display seen St Lomans finish the game on top.

All Ireland Street League

This coming Wednesday May 16th sees the start of an internal ‘Street League’ consisting of players from the under-8 boys and under-10 girls as we launch our own All-Ireland series for the next 5 weeks!

Each team will be made up of boys and girls from those age groups with a series of group games followed by semi-finals and finals for all the teams. So whether you’re representing Westmeath or Dublin, it promises to be a fun-filled experience for all involved!

Garda Gaa Book

The launch of the Garda GAA book “Guardians of the GAA” is fixed for Friday May 18th at 7pm in Copper Face Jacks. The book is a compilation of all the members of the force who have represented their counties at senior level in Gaelic Football and Hurling from 1922 to 2017 plus a number of other chapters about the GAA and the Gardaí.

Lotto

There was no jackpot winner from the lotto draw on May 10^th. The numbers drawn were 2,8,13,27. Winners of €50 each were Gerry Farrell, Tony Robinson, Mary Casey and Sean Kiernan. Next week’s jackpot will be €3,400.

Condolences

St Lomans Mullingar wishes to offer its condolences to the Heffernan and O Toole Families following the passing of  Catherine (Kitty) Heffernan and also to Thornton family following the passing of Antoinette Sheppard Thornton. Ar dheis íamh de raibh siad.
