Leinster Championship

St Lomans Mullingar 1.12 St Columbas Mullinalaghta 1.11

St Lomans left it until second half injury time to take the lead for the first time in this Leinster Championship Quarter Final and the point from Paddy Dowdall proved the winner. A large crowd ascended on Glennon Brothers Pearse Park to catch a repeat of last year’s game. For large parts of the sixty minutes it mirrored the 2016 game with a similar outcome looking likely but this determined St Lomans team had other ideas.

St Lomans made a nightmare start to the game and found themselves 1.02 to 0.00 down after five minutes. Gary Rodgers and James Mc Givney were point scorers while David Mc Givney raised the green flag when capitalising on a high ball into their full forward line. St Lomans responded well with scores from John Heslin(2) and Shane Dempsey. Heslin’s a great score after winning Jason Dalys kick out while Dempsey’s quick turn of foot found him with space to shoot over.

Both teams kicked three points each midway through the half with Heslin twice on target from placed balls after Shane Dempsey and Ronan O Toole had been fouled. Ken Casey fisted over after a wonderful Kelvin Reilly pass.

Mullinalaghta finished the second half strongly and kicked points from James Mc Givney, Gary Rodgers and Rian Brady. Shane Dempsey got his second point after a brilliant Ronan O Toole block overturned a Mullinalaghta attack. The home side went into the break four points in front but would have been disappointed not to have been further ahead after playing with a strong wind to their advantage.

It was St Lomans who had wind advantage in the second half but it was the home side who started the half the better with points from Gary Rodgers and Jason Matthews. It looked like this was going to be another defeat in Longford for the blues but the introduction of Ciaran Kilmurray and Kieran Lynam had an immediate impact. Kilmurray added physicality while Lynam worked tremendously winning breaks that St Lomans were struggling to win previously.

John Heslin kicked St Lomans first second half point heading into the final quarter but Mullinalaghta quickly restored their six-point lead. Heslin responded once again with two pointed frees as the game headed into the final nine minutes. Although trailing by four points the momentum of the game was starting to swing the blues way and a goal would surely change the course of the game. Step up Ciaran Kilmurray who charged towards goal and his run seen him fouled and a penalty was awarded. Captain John Heslin made no mistake from the spot and he buried home to leave the minimum between the sides. Conradh Reilly and Garrett Hickey were introduced to the action at this stage and added freshness to the blues display.

St Lomans levelled the game in the 59th minute of play with Kieran Lynam kicking over after a Ronan O Toole pass. At this stage there looked only one winner with the blues in full swing. The winner came in the sixty first minute from a man better known for controlling the defence. Paddy Dowdall found himself in space out on the wing and he sent a high shot straight between the posts to give the blues the lead. Five tense minutes followed but the blues showed great composure and held on for an incredible win.

The journey continues with a semi-final clash against Meath champions Simonstown Gaels in Cusack Park on November 26th
