Minor Lads Suffer Narrow Defeat In Final.
02-11-2017

St Lomans Mullingar 1.08 Athlone 0.13

St Lomans Minors contested the Championship Final in Cusack Park on Sunday last with the game ending in a two-point defeat at the hands of a decent Athlone team.

Athlone opened the scoring with a point from full forward Stephen O Connor. St Lomans made the perfect response and took the lead with a great finish to the net from Conan O Hara. The goal resulted from brilliant lead up play from Sam Mc Cartan and Paul Smith. Athlone were level soon after with points from man of the match Kieran Colclough, one of these a wonderful free from distance. St Lomans were guilty of wides from scorable opportunities and were lucky when a penalty from Athlone wasn’t converted. TJ Cox and Adam Lynch points were scored either side of Athlone points to leave the teams level at the break.

Conan O Hara and TJ Cox registered early second half points for St Lomans but a dominant period was to follow for the southsiders. They kicked six points in a crucial ten-minute spell. As the game entered the closing stages the blues chances looked slim. However, they battled right up until the final whistle with TJ Cox, Enda Gaffney, Cian Cleary and Conan O Hara adding points but Athlone held on for a two-point win.

It wasn’t to be the blues day but their commitment and determination deserves huge credit. It must also be noted that ten of the starting fifteen are eligible for minor again next year so the future is bright!
