19-09-2017

St Lomans Mullingar 1.11 Athlone 4.06

St Lomans were knocked out of the U21 Championship after a four-point defeat to Athlone in Pairc Chairain on Friday night last. Four goals proved the difference particularly two in first half injury time.

It was a tight opening to the game with both team’s level after ten minutes with James Cox and Ronan O Toole point scorers for St Lomans. Corner back Tristan Johnson made a heroic goal line block to deny Athlone a certain goal. The goals soon arrived however with Athlone raising the green flag twice in between a Chris Gilbert goal for the blues. Gilberts goal the result of a wonderful solo run from the wing forward. Conan O Hara and Paddy Lynam had also pointed for St Lomans but it was the home side who were looking menacing. James Cox and Chris Gilbert added points to leave just the minimum between the sides heading into injury time. Athlone added two goals in quick concession and this gave them a lead that wouldn’t be overturned.

St Lomans were the better team in the second half holding Athlone to just two points scored. A James Cox free and Ronan O Toole point reduced the deficit. Ryan Cleary made a wonderful save while substitute Tristan Graham made a block both denying Athlone a fifth goal. St Lomans needed a goal to really have a chance of overturning the score but it never arrived. Points from Adam Lynch, Conan O Hara and Paddy Lynam weren’t enough as Athlone finished four-point winners.
