Senior Championship

St Lomans Mullingar 2.24 Killucan 1.07

St Lomans recorded an emphatic win and booked their place in the championship semi final against a lethargic looking Killucan side in Cusack Park on Wednesday evening last. A dominant first half saw the blues lead seventeen points to no score at half time.

St Lomans set their mark early in the game kicking five points in the opening eight minutes. John Heslin(2), Shane Dempsey(2) and Ken Casey were the scorers. Casey linked up well with Heslin soon after and a thundering shot rattled the crossbar to deny the blues a goal. A further twelve points were added in the remainder of the half with some scores of the highest quality. Heslin added four with two of these frees from either sideline one with the left foot and the other with the right. Shane Dempsey couldn’t miss and added three more to his tally. Paddy Dowdall turned into forward mode and kicked a wonderful score with his left foot! Kieran Lynam, David Whelan, David Windsor and Ken Casey made up the rest of the point scorers.

The second half proved to be a slightly more competitive affair with the blues outscoring Killucan 2.07 to 1.07 in this half. The introduction of Conor Jordan for Killucan proved a good move as he scored 1.03. John Heslin and Ken Casey linked up once again and this time the green flag was raised when Casey fisted to the net. Blues goalkeeper Jason Daly denied Killucan a second goal with a wonderful save from a Paul Greville effort. Ronan O Toole and substitute Garrett Hickey got in on the act with a point each while Dempsey, Kieran Lynam and John Heslin all added to their tallies including Heslin rattling in the blues second goal.

St Lomans Mullingar 4.14 Athlone 0.12

St Lomans finished off their group in fine style with a win against Athlone in Rochfortbridge on Sunday evening last. Second half goals from John Heslin(2), Ciaran Kilmurray and Shane Dempsey sent the blues on course for victory.

The teams were level on two points each after twelve minutes with John Heslin on target for the blues. The second point was a result of wonderful defending from Neil O Toole and Paddy Dowdall. Noel Mulligan and John Connellan were Athlone’s scorers. Both teams traded points midway through the half with David Whelan and Heslin(2) kicking over for St Lomans. Resolute defending from Shane Flynn set up one of Heslin’s points. St Lomans put clear daylight between the teams in the final few minutes of the half. Kelvin Reilly got his name on the scoresheet before Ken Casey brought a wonderful save from Athlone goalkeeper Conor Devaney to deflect his shot over the bar. Paul Sharry kicked a classy score with the outside of his boot before John Heslin kicked his fifth point of the half to leave the score 9 points to 6 points in favour of the blues.

St Lomans made a bright start to the second half scoring 1.01 in the opening five minutes with substitute Ciaran Kilmurray scoring the goal. Athlone hit their best spell in the game clocking up three unanswered points with Jack Quinn, John Connellan and John Stapleton raising the white flag.

Paddy Dowdall stopped their revival when he ran through to kick a point and from here the blues never looked back. Kelvin Reilly sent a thundering shot off the crossbar and maybe if “Hawkeye” was in play then a goal might have been awarded as his rebound looked to have crossed the line! A goal soon followed however when Shane Dempsey coolly finished to the net after a brilliant Ken Casey pass. Athlone added points from John Connellan, Jordan Marshment and Paul Bannon but Shane Dempsey replied two of his own. St Lomans added two more goals in the final few minutes with John Heslin converting a penalty after Ciaran Kilmurray had been fouled. The sublime pass from Garrett Hickey to Kilmurray couldn’t go unmentioned. Heslin’s other goal was the result of a long solo run through the Athlone defence and he neatly slotted to the net.

Junior Championship

St Lomans Mullingar 2.12 The Downs 2.13

St Lomans suffered defeat to The Downs by the narrowest of margins in the Junior Championship in Lakepoint Park on Thursday evening last. The result means the lads can’t make the knock out stages of the championship.

St Lomans made a bright start with Chris Gilbert in great form scoring 1.01 in the opening six minutes, these followed after Daniel Sheridan had opened the scoring with a point. The visitors kept in touch and responded to most of the blues scores as Shane Boyce, Daniel Sheridan, Chris Gilbert and Tristan Johnson added further points. Minor Championship

St Lomans Mullingar 6.13 Mullingar Shamrocks 1.08

St Lomans finished their championship group with maximum points and booked their place in the Quarter Final with a win in Lakepoint Park against neighbours Mullingar Shamrocks. The scoreline doesn’t reflect the competitiveness of the game for the majority with a strong finish from the blues seeing them break away from their neighbours challenge.

It was tit for tat in the opening thirty minutes with each blues score responded to by a resilient Mullingar Shamrocks side. Sam Mc Cartan was on target with a point while Conan O Hara was deadly accurate from placed balls kicking four points. The hard work of Paul Smith seen him fouled for the majority of O Hara’s frees.  Cian Cleary was unlucky not to raise the green flag when hitting the woodwork on two occasions. Oisín Hogan kicked a fine point as he enjoyed an impressive display in midfield. St Lomans eventually got their first goal with Stephen Sheridan finishing off a fine move involving Shane Broughan and Paul Smith. Both teams traded a point in the closing stages of the half as the blues held a four point lead at the break.

St Lomans stepped things up a notch on the resumption of play. The introduction of Adam Lynch at full back paid dividends with him having an immediate impact intercepting a Shamrocks attack. His pass out off defence started a move that resulted in a Conan O Hara goal.  Sam Mc Cartan(2) and Fola Ayorinde added points before Paul Smith hit the blues third goal. St Lomans added three further goals in a clinical final quarter with Fola Ayorinde, Shane Boyce and Conan O Hara the scorers. The classy Sam Mc Cartan added two further points while Paul Smith was also on target in a comfortable finish for St Lomans.
