Senior Championship

St Lomans Mullingar 4.12 Garrycastle 1.10

Goals proved crucial yet again as St Lomans bagged another four in their Senior Championship third round tie against Garrycastle in Rosemount on Saturday evening.

It was a tight affair in the opening thirty minutes with little to separate the teams yet it seemed St Lomans were always in control of the game. Ken Casey opened the scoring with a point before Doran Harte equalised for Garrycastle. St Lomans were denied an early goal with the woodwork getting in the way! John Heslin and Sean Flanagan added points before the blues first goal arrived. David Windsor did well to intercept a quick kick out from Garrycastle and he laid it off to David Whelan who in turn supplied John Heslin who made no mistake and buried to the roof of the net. Garrycastle were guilty of misses chances from placed balls and changing Conor Cosgrove to free taking duties paid off as he kicked four points either side of two John Heslin points. Michael Monaghan got the final say of the half with a point to leave two between the teams at half time.

Garrycastle started the second half brightly but points from Justin Barrett and Conor Cosgrove were cancelled out by John Heslin and Shane Dempsey scores. It was from here the blues stepped up a few gears and took complete control. Paul Sharry kicked a 45m free after a wonderful defensive clearance denied St Lomans their second goal. Ronan O Toole was dragged down in the box ten minutes into the half and John Heslin raised the green flag with the resulting penalty.

The move of the game arrived in the thirteenth minute of the half when John Heslin rose and caught for a mark, his quick pass to Paul Sharry in full stride saw the St Lomans midfielder cut through the Garrycastle defence and bury to the net for a goal of the season contender. David Whelan got his name on the scoresheet with a point before substitute Paddy Dowdall made an immediate impact intercepting a Garrycastle attack, his ball to Ronan O Toole set up man of the match John Heslin who completed his hat trick for the blues fourth goal. The final few minutes saw both teams add further scores with David Windsor kicking a fine point while Alex Gardiner got a goal for Garrycastle.
