Feis Cup

St Lomans Mullingar 1.15 The Downs 1.11

St Lomans travelled to Molloy Park to play The Downs on a sunny Sunday morning last in the opening round of the Feis Cup. Perfect conditions ensured an entertaining game of football with both teams having stand out forwards on display, Ken Casey scoring 1.06 for St Lomans while Luke Loughlin clocked up seven points for the home side.

It was Loughlin who opened the scoring with a point and added a second soon after to give The Downs an early lead. David Windsor who impressed throughout got St Lomans off the mark after linking up with Billy Loughlin. Dillon Carroll extended The Downs lead with a pointed free. St Lomans controlled the second quarter and added a number of scores to give them a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Billy O Loughlin, Daniel Sheridan, Ken Casey and Ciaran Kilmurray were the point scorers. Sheridan’s point finished off a fast-paced move involving David Whelan, Ronan O Toole and Fola Ayorinde and the blues were unlucky not to get a goal from this move.

The green flag was raised soon after when Ken Casey’s quick turn out on the half forward line sent him towards the danger zone, a quick one two pass with Ciaran Kilmurray saw Casey fist to the net. Casey added two points soon after. Stephen Gallagher denied The Downs a certain goal with a top class save. Luke Loughlin added two points towards the end of the half but it was the blues who had a five-point lead.

It was Loughlin who was on target again to open the scoring of the second half before once again Stephen Gallagher made a crucial save to deny the home side. Fola Ayorinde latched onto a deflected David Whelan pass to get his first point. Half Forwards David Windsor and Kieran Lynam added points either side of points for The Downs. Scores were traded throughout the half with David Whelan and Ken Casey (4) the scorers for St Lomans including a wonderfully executed 45m free from Casey.

A comfortable finish to the game look a possibility but the Downs had other ideas and when they were awarded a penalty it gave them a lifeline. However, Stephen Gallagher was on hand to deny them once again when he parried away Loughlin’ s penalty. The Downs did get a goal via Joseph Moran but it was too late as St Lomans held on to progress to the next round.
