St Lomans recorded an important win in The Division 1 League away to Rosemount on Sunday morning last. Three goals from St Lomans proved to be the difference on a windy morning. Ironically either team played their better football while playing against that strong wind.
Rosemount started brightly and raced into a two-point lead thanks to scores from their talisman David Mc Cormack. St Lomans were wasteful with their chances in the opening quarter and could easily have scored two goals. Paul Sharry got the blues off the mark with a pointed free after twelve minutes. Some wonderful defending from Neil O Toole started a move involving Kelvin Reilly and Ronan O Toole that saw Paul Sharry bury a shot to the net. Rosemount were deadly accurate from placed balls and added two further points with David Mc Cormack and Sean Pettit the scorers. Ronan O Toole and a Paul Sharry points cancelled out scores for the home side. David Windsor and Ken Casey added a point each in the closing stages of the half before Sean Pettit pointed for Rosemount. This score would be Rosemount’s final score from play.
St Lomans introduced Chris Gilbert at half time and he would prove his worth during the half with two goals. David Mc Cormack converted a free at the start of the half before Gilbert finished to the net for St Lomans second goal. Great work from Ronan O Toole, Billy O Loughlin, Paul Sharry and Ken Casey set up the goal. A wonderful point from David Windsor cancelled out a David Mc Cormack free. Chris Gilbert got his second goal eight minutes into the second half after a Paul Sharry free fell short. Ken Casey and Billy O Loughlin were unlucky not to add further goals later in the half. David Windsor and Paul Sharry added points in the closing stages of the game to seal a five-point win for St Lomans.
Goals proved crucial in this game but a great defensive performance shouldn’t go unmentioned. The home side were held to just four points scored from play. Neil O Toole and Sean Lancaster were the standout defenders on the day while young Kevin Regan held his own at senior level. Gerry Grehan, David Whelan and Jason O Toole were reliable as always.
