Unbeaten Run In Division 1 Comes To An End!
06-03-2017

St Lomans Mullingar 1.10 Athlone 2.10

St Lomans long unbeaten run in the Division 1 League came to an end at the hands of Athlone in Lakepoint Park on Friday night last. The persistent rain made for difficult playing conditions but both team’s put on a solid contest in front of a small crowd.

Athlone made the perfect start when a high ball not long from the throw in was sent into the box and the tallest man on the pitch John Stapleton fisted to the net. St Lomans responded well with Shane Dempsey their liveliest player kicking four points in the opening quarter. Stapleton added a point for Athlone in between Demo’s scores before blues corner forward Billy O Loughlin finished off a fine team move to raise the green flag. He took his goal in fine fashion calmly side stepping the keeper to slot home! Both teams added points in the closing stages of the half with Ronan O Toole (2) and Shane Dempsey on target for the blues before the visitors got their second goal to leave them a point to the good at the break.

The second half belonged to Athlone with their superior fitness at this stage of the season proving the difference. St Lomans would only score three points in a poor second half performance. Ken Casey pointed with a shot off his left boot while David Windsor kicked a wonderful score from distance. John Connellan and Jordan Marshment were the visitors best players and played key roles in a three point win for the southsiders.
