Defeat to Neighbours In Division 5
06-03-2017

St. Lomans Mullingar 0-07 Mullingar Shamrocks 2-10

St. Lomans hosted neighbours Mullingar Shamrocks in the second-round of the league on Friday night last in Lakepoint Park. Once again St. Lomans fielded a very diverse team, with no less than 11 changes from the team that suffered a one point defeat to Moate in the first round. Cleary, Cox, Gilbert and Lambden been the only four survivors from that game.

Played in ideal conditions on the 3G surface Shamrocks opened the scoring and took the lead with a well taken point, a lead they were never to relinquish. Referee Mickey Dan Murtagh kept the game free flowing throughout and both sides appeared evenly matched. The impressive Eoin Fox was causing the opposition a few headaches and he tapped over some lovely scores but at halftime the score was 0-4 to 0-3 in favour of the visiting side. The highlight of the first half was a wonderful fingertip save from Paul Mc Gann.

At half time St Lomans introduced Ian Plunkett, Hugh Broderick, Tristan Johnson and Garrett Hickey to the fray and shortly afterwards they also introduced Andrew McKenna and Conor Matthews. It was a close affair until the last 10 minutes but Shamrocks finally raised a green flag to go 5 points ahead and although points from Enda Matthews and Chris Gilbert kept the Blues in contention, the concession of a late penalty to Shamrocks left the result of the game in no doubt.
