Division 1

St Lomans Mullingar 1.12 Tyrrellspass 0.10

St Lomans started their Division 1 campaign with an away game against Tyrrellspass on Saturday last in dry but cold conditions. The match was a re-run of the county final last year and similarly it was close fought encounter with Lomans prevailing by a score line of 1.12 to 0.10

Due to players being unavailable due to other commitments this was a young St Lomans team and the newcomers acquitted themselves very well no more so that debutant corner back Jack Tyrrell who had a fine game in a defence superbly marshalled as always by Paddy Dowdall.

The first half was close with St Lomans keeping in front through the consistent accuracy of Ronan O’Toole who had a fine game all through. The highlight of the first half was a well worked goal started in defence by Paddy Dowdall and finished to the net by James Cox. This goal was the difference between the two teams at half time.

The second half was a more physical affair and after an injury to Gerry Grehan in the first half Lomans also lost Shane Flynn and Sean Flanagan to injuries. However Ciaran Lynam was showing he has lost none of his great ball winning and passing abilities providing a link between defence and attack the Blues tagged on further scores with Ronan O ‘Toole again prominent on the scoresheet. The forced substitutions allowed Luke Dempsey and his management team the chance to blood a number of players at this level for the first time and Kevin Regan and Declan Colgan made fine contributions from the bench.

St Lomans despite being reduced to fourteen men for most of the second half ran out five point winners for a winning start to the defence of their league title.

Division 5

St Lomans Mullingar 1.07 Moate 0.11

St Lomans can count themselves very unlucky not to have secured at least a share of the spoils when leaving a bitterly cold Hogan Park last Sunday morning. Selectors Jack Nugent and Robbie Cleary started with a team which offered a nice blend of youth and experience and overall the players acquitted themselves very well considering it was the opening league game of the 2017 season.

Having won the toss, Moate chose to play with the advantage of a strong wind and they got off to a good start by tapping over some early points. It took St. Lomans a while to settle but with Michael Gleeson and Shane Boyce controlling the halfback line and with Christy Gilbert and Johnno Plunkett controlling midfield St Lomans started to gain a foothold and eventually found their stride. Declan Colgan opened the scoring for the blues with a well taken point and shortly afterward the lively James Cox raised another white flag to leave Moate going into the break with a 0-6 to 0-2 advantage.

With Moate now facing the wind in the second half they took a more direct route towards the St Lomans goal however thanks to the excellent Mark Browne and the evergreen Joe Mathews the Lomans defence held firm. The introduction of Johnson, Sheridan, Broderick and Regan worked very well and added a new impetus to the side. Colgan and Cox continued with some good scores and when Enda Lambden was dragged down for a penalty Gareth Hickey assuredly converted it, leaving it all square with few minutes to go. St Lomans really should have pushed on at this stage as the game was there for the taking but with time nearly up a lapse of concentration allowed Moate to push forward to score the winner. Overall this was an excellent display from such a varied team and augurs well for the future.
