St Lomans Mullingar 2.15 Castledaly 2.10

St Lomans travelled to Pairc Chiarain Athlone on Friday night last to play Castledaly in the Feis Cup Final. The almost freezing temperatures and heavy fog left for difficult playing conditions with visibility at a minimum for players, match officials and supporters alike! The game however didn’t disappoint with some scores from both sides of the highest quality.

Castledaly were liveliest for most of the first half and opened the scoring with a point after two minutes. John Heslin levelled matters with a free after he was fouled and St Lomans soon took the lead from a Conradh Reilly point with a blues move capitalising on a misjudged kick out. Lorcan Dolan who was the oppositions biggest threat added two points to sway the game in Castledalys favour and indeed they could have had a goal soon after only to be denied by goalkeeper Stephen Gallagher. Both Teams traded scores mid way through the half with Ronan O Toole twice on target for St Lomans. Conradh Reilly added a point on the 25 minute mark and he soon turned provider for Paul Sharry who finished to the net with a classy finish. Castledaly responded immediately with a goal of their own before Shane Dempsey levelled the scores on the stroke of half time.

St Lomans made three changes at half time with the experienced Ciaran Kilmurray, Gerry Grehan and David Whelan entering the field.  A clinical start to the second half proved crucial as man of the match John Heslin added two points with one straight from the throw in. Shane Flynn made a darting run out of defence and found Shane Dempsey with a pass who sent the ball into Ciaran Kilmurray’s direction. Killer made no mistake and buried to the back of the net.  Castledaly were determined to get back into the game and reduced the margin with two points. St Lomans though took control once again and added five unanswered points with John Heslin(4) and wing back Paddy Dowdall on target. Lorcan Dolan added two points only to be cancelled out by two further Heslin points including a sublime effort with his left foot. A penalty was awarded in the closing seconds of the game for the southsiders and Lorcan Dolan raised the green flag but it was in vain as referee Niall Ward blew the final whistle from the re start.

The game brings an end to a dream season for the senior team completing the clean sweep of the senior championship, League title and the Feis Cup. Well done to manager Luke Dempsey, selectors Jimmy Davitt and Robbie Kenny while the hard work of kit man Christy Martin shouldn’t go unnoticed. Finally and the biggest of thanks of all to the lads that really made it possible… the players!!!
